The Flames were one of the third-best placed teams in the group stages with a record of one win, one draw and one loss. Malawi is also the only Southern African nation to have qualified to the next round, as Zimbabwe and the Comoros had their engines cutout at the group stages.

The Flames will face Morocco at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde. The Atlas Lions were in cruise control in the group stages with two wins and one draw. Morocco will be favourites for this clash of North Africa and Southern Africa, however Afcon 2021 has been full of surprises with Ghana and defending champions Algeria booted out of the tournament – Sports Desk

15 January 2022 – The Warriors have failed to go through to the next round of the Africa Cup of Nations after loosing to Malawi 2-1. The Warriors were favourites to win as they’ve defeated the Flames seven times in the twelve games that the two neighbours had played. However when it counted, the Flames put up a gutsy performance with two goals from Orlando Pirates striker Frank Mhango. The star-studded Zimbabwe squad looked shell shocked not withstanding a defensive error that resulted in the second goal, especially after a very good performance in the opening match against Sadio Mane’s Senegal. The final game for the Warriors will be against Guinea on the 18th January 2022 at the Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium. The Flames will be playing AFCON 2021 favourites, Senegal and is a must win game in order to proceed to the quarterfinals – Sports Desk

13 January 2022 – The two Southern African sides in the African Cup of Nations, AFCON 2021 need to win their remaining Group B games in order to get to the next round. They face each other on Friday 14 January 2022 at the Kouekong Stadium in Bafoussam. The Warriors were unlucky in their first game against Senegal as Platinum FC’s Kelvin Madzongwe’s conceded a stoppage time penalty which Sadio Mane converted to make it a win for the Lions of Teranga.

Malawi put up a good fight against Guinea, however physically the Flames struggled to keep up with the West Africans. The Flames will need to improve on their physio and conditioning to withstand the Cameroon humidity. Baroka FC’s Richard Mbulu was introduced in the 65th minute and reinforced the attacking power. Guinea eventually held on to secure the win. It will be almost a PSL game as between the two Southern Nations, ten players are based in South Africa plying their trade in different professional tiers. Dennis Chembezi, Khuda Muyaba (both Polokwane City), Richard Mbulu (Baroka FC) and Gerald Takawa (Venda Football Academy) play for Limpopo based teams and the province will be well represented in Afcon 2022 – Sports Desk

Liverpool and Senegalese captain Sadio Mane will be pivotal in the game that will be a must win for the 2019 finalists. For Gerald Takwara of Gladafrica Championship side Venda Football Academy, it will be special to be part of an Afcon team that will face the West African side. Takwara has only three caps for Zimbabwe, however the 27 year old midfielder is already a veteran in South Africa’s second tier league having played for Cape Town Spurs and this season for Vhembe based Venda Football Academy. AFCON 2022 – Game On!

https://twitter.com/richardmbulu

African Cup of Nations will kick off on 09 January 2022 with host Cameroon taking on Burkina Faso. Baroka FC based attacking striker Richard Mbulu will be critical for Malawi to go through the first round of Group B in the cup of nations. Mbulu’s first game will be against the tiny West African nation of Guinea. A sergeant in the Malawian Defence Force, Richard Mbulu has only scored a solitary goal out of ten appearances this season for Bakgaka ba Ga-Mphahlele. It’s been a dissappointing season for the Malawian striker, so Afcon 2022 may be enough motivation to get back in form and also attract interest from Europe. Mbulu’s Malawi will take on Zimbabwe on 14 January 2022 at the Bafoussam Omnisport Stadium. It will be a Southern African derby with most players plying their trade in the South African professional leagues. The two Cosafa countries will have a tough group to content with as Afcon 2019 finalists Senegal have high ambitions of making it to the final – Sports Desk
